ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution is a contact lens solution manufactured by Bausch & Lomb.
ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution is used to cleanse prescription contact lenses.
Since 2006, the FDA is continuing to work closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Bausch & Lomb to investigate the source of Fusarium keratitis eye infections reportedly caused by ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution. The FDA supports Bausch & Lomb’s decision to voluntarily withdraw ReNu with MoistureLoc from the market until the agencies have had a chance to conclude their investigation.
ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution has been associated with causing Fusarium keratitis, a serious fungal eye infection, among consumers who use the product.
On April 13, 2006, Bausch & Lomb announced that it is withdrawing all U.S.-manufactured ReNu with MoistureLoc products and is recommending that consumers stop using ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution immediately because of a possible link between use of the product and the development of Fusarium keratitis, which may result in blindness if left untreated. The company, along with the FDA, has acknowledged 109 cases of suspected Fusarium keratitis in 17 different states linked to the use of ReNu with MoistureLoc.
ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution is contraindicated in patients who have a history of eye infections and/or have a history of eye surgeries.
What is Fusarium keratitis?
While the symptoms may vary from one person to another, they usually include:
- Sudden blurry vision
- Unusual redness of the eye
- Pain in the eye
- Excessive tearing or discharge from your eye
- Hypersensitivity to light
How does one get Fusarium keratitis?
Under ordinary circumstances, Fusarium infections are rare and are triggered by a variety of causes, including trauma (especially when plant material gets into the eye), immune system problems, chronic disease of the surface of the eye, and, as now exposed, by wearing contact lenses. The infection is not transmitted from person to person, however.
In mid-2005, an unusual increase in Fusarium keratitis cases among contact lens wearers was observed first in Asia, and then spread worldwide. The cause of the upsurge has been linked to using ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution. The company has since withdrawn the product from the market worldwide, with a consumer recommendation to stop using it immediately.
I think I have an eye infection. What should I do?
If you think you have an eye infection, you should schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist immediately. If you do have Fusarium keratitis, early diagnosis and treatment are your best chance to avoid blindness.
- Stop using ReNu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution immediately
- Talk to your doctor about alternative solutions
- Use the “rub and rinse method” rather than no rub solutions
- Maintain hygiene when putting in and taking out contacts
Can I file a lawsuit if I have suffered damages from taking Renu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution?
Possibly. While all medications have certain, anticipated side effects, a drug manufacturer has a duty to inform physicians adequately regarding the known risks associated with its drugs. If a manufacturer fails to do so, it can be held responsible to patients who are injured as the result of inadequate warnings, under a legal theory known as “product liability.” Depending upon the particular circumstances of your case, damages may include recovery for any of the following:
- Past and future medical expenses
- Past and future pain and suffering
- Lost wages
- Loss of future earning capacity
- Emotional distress
If you or a loved one has experienced any health problems while taking Renu with MoistureLoc Lens Solution, you should contact your doctor immediately. You may also wish to contact an experienced Renu with MoistureLoc lawyer to discuss your legal options. As all legal claims are subject to time limits, however, you may risk forfeiture of your right to financial compensation if you delay.
